Brent Schulz is seeking his third consecutive term as Horry County Council member for District Two.
Nearing the end of his second term, Schulz said he enjoys his work on council and is happy he has been able to help his constituents.
“I really enjoy serving on council a lot,” Schulz said. “Over my two terms, we have been able to accomplish many of the things people wanted to see in the district without raising taxes.”
Schulz listed his number one accomplishment as the construction of a new boat landing near the intersection of SC 22 and SC 31. The landing has two boat ramps providing access to the intracoastal waterway, 46 parking spaces and picnic tables. It was constructed as a joint project between the Horry County Recreation Department, the County Transportation Committee, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services and S.C. Department of Natural Resources.
“Even though it is relatively new, the new landing is being utilized very well during the boating season,” said Schulz.
Another project in the works is a landscaping and park project behind Tanger Outlets at the intersection of US 17 and SC 22 which includes a dog park, fishing piers, walking trains and a boardwalk. The landscaping will include a number of palms and crepe myrtles as well as native wildflowers.
Better delineation of beach access points along Shore Drive has been accomplished for visitors and locals alike. Surfboard signs locate the access points with landscaping around them, parking on the beach for golf carts and use of proceeds from county paid parking spaces are used to beautify the beach.
An overlay district on restaurant row and Lake Arrowhead Road has been established as a 20 year project to beautify the area.
In addition to the above projects, Schulz said he speaks with constituents on a daily basis trying to help them work through the red tape of dealing with county government.
“Many times I feel like a traffic cop helping them work through the red tape and get to the right people in county government,” Schulz said.
Schulz currently serves as Chairman of the Horry County Public Safety Committee.
“One of the most important things we accomplished in the last year was taking steps to maintain a low ISO rating throughout the county to help citizens save money on fire insurance,” Schulz said.
Another recent issue was the limitations put on strip clubs throughout the unincorporated areas of the county.
“We can’t legally bar strip clubs from operating, but we have taken steps to limit their impact on the quality of life of our residents,” Schulz said.
Schulz said keeping taxes low, maintaining and improving the quality of life of county residents and maintaining county services at necessary levels are goals for his next term.
“I am a conservative, especially when it comes to taxes,” he said. “But, that doesn’t mean we can’t continue to look at the most effective and cost efficient ways to deliver the level of county services that our residents expect.”
“I have truly enjoyed my two terms on council and look forward to continuing my service with a third term,” said Schulz. “I ask for your vote in the upcoming June 10th Republican Primary for Horry County Council District Two.”
